Moment of a Couple



 
Imagine a force being applied to an object. If the object is unrestrained it will move and rotate. Try it yourself, perhaps you have a pencil sitting on your desk, push it to see how it translates and rotates. But if you apply two forces that are equal and opposite it will only rotate. In statics if you have two forces that are equal but opposite and parallel it is called a couple. In summary a couple only creates rotation.
